Procedure
Plantar fasciotomy and tarsal tunnel are two procedures that are often performed in conjunction with one another to treat chronic foot and ankle pain. Plantar fasciotomy involves making an incision in the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes. The goal of this procedure is to release tension in the fascia, reducing pain caused by plantar fasciitis, a condition characterized by inflammation of this tissue. Tarsal tunnel syndrome occurs when the posterior tibial nerve is compressed as it passes through a narrow passage known as the tarsal tunnel. The tarsal tunnel procedure entails releasing this nerve from entrapment or compression by cutting specific ligaments in the foot.
When is This Procedure Necessary?
Before suggesting surgery, doctors will typically encourage patients to experiment with different conservative therapies. These alternative therapies include adjusting physical activity, orthotics, and manipulation. Doctors may recommend a combination of these two surgical procedures if patients have been diagnosed with both plantar fasciitis and tarsal tunnel syndrome.
What To Expect
Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. During a plantar fasciotomy, the surgeon will cut and release a portion of the plantar fascia, which is a thick band of tissue located on the bottom of the foot. This procedure can be used to treat plantar fasciitis, a common cause of heel pain.
During tarsal tunnel repair, the surgeon will focus on decompressing the tibial nerve as it passes through a narrow tunnel in the ankle called the tarsal tunnel. This procedure is often performed to alleviate symptoms associated with tarsal tunnel syndrome such as pain, tingling, and numbness in the foot. Both surgeries are typically performed on an outpatient basis.
