Procedure
A biopsy of a hard palate lesion is a surgical procedure to remove a portion of a lesion on the roof of the mouth. The sample is then tested for disease including oropharyngeal cancer or an oral cavity. Patients may consider an oral biopsy if they notice an abnormality in their mouth. Sometimes, your dentist or doctor will notice a lesion when assessing the mouth for another reason.
During this procedure, the doctor will collect a tiny sample of the soft tissue for analysis. This sample will then be tested for different diseases to determine if it is benign (non-cancerous) or if it requires further removal or treatment.
When is this Procedure Necessary?
Doctors may recommend a hard palate lesion biopsy if they notice an abnormality in the mouth that is hindering oral function. An oral biopsy is an important method to determine whether an abnormality in the mouth is of concern. Depending on the results, doctors can make an informed decision on what the next steps should be.
Preparing for Your Procedure
A biopsy of a hard palate lesion is a straightforward procedure that typically takes less than 30 minutes. During the procedure, the doctor will administer a topical and/or local anesthetic so the patient will be comfortable throughout.
There are a few different ways that a biopsy of the hard palate can be performed, but it typically follows this general outline. Once the area is numbed, the doctor will use an instrument to extract a small lesion sample. Patients will typically hear back about results within two weeks. Depending on the results the doctor collects, they can determine if the lesion is of concern or not.
