Procedure
Laser ablation of the cervix is a minimally invasive surgery that treats patients who have been diagnosed with cervical cancer. During this procedure, the doctor will use a laser to create heat and destroy the cancerous cells. Cervical cancer can be detected during a Pap smear, which patients typically undergo during their annual gynecology appointments. The benefits of laser ablation cervix procedure include reduced risk of scarring and infection, shorter recovery time, and higher precision compared to traditional surgical methods.
When is This Procedure Necessary?
Laser ablation of the cervix is considered medically necessary in cases where abnormal cells are detected on the surface of the cervix during a Pap smear. These abnormal cells can indicate precancerous changes that need to be treated to prevent cervical cancer. This procedure is recommended for patients with high-grade dysplasia or persistent low-grade dysplasia that has not resolved on its own.
What To Expect
Immediately post-procedure, patients may experience mild cramping or spotting, which typically subsides within a few days. Patients need to abstain from sexual intercourse, tampon use, and douching for at least 1-2 weeks to prevent infection and allow the cervix to heal properly.
