Procedure
Unilateral breast reconstruction with implant placement is a two-stage procedure that is typically performed during or after a single-side mastectomy. This procedure is performed in two stages: the 1st stage involves using a tissue expander and the 2nd stage involves placing an implant. The two-stage process is recommended for patients who do not have enough skin to accommodate an implant. A unilateral breast reconstruction procedure is recommended if the patient has breast cancer on a single breast.
When is This Procedure Necessary?
Breast reconstruction is considered a cosmetic procedure, meaning it is not medically necessary. However, patients may consider undergoing this if they recently underwent a unilateral mastectomy as the result of breast cancer in one breast or another disease that warrants removal. Patients may qualify for a two-stage breast reconstruction if they do not have enough skin to accommodate an implant.
